Micro-Mosaics Redux

Since posting his first micro-mosaic, Arthur Gugick (torgugick) has been busy making more.  If you'll recall, this technique uses printed tiles, but for a 1x2 tile, half is covered by the next tile.  It's done in a stair-step fashion, and allows for a much greater resolution of an image in a smaller space.

Here are a few more of his micro-mosaics, as shown at BrickWorld Indy:

Here is a close-up of the Abe Lincoln micro-mosaic:

In this image, you can see only half of the 1x2 tiles used in the image, and you can also see how the tiles are oriented in different directions to achieve a slightly different quality of color.

Here's one more micro-mosaic, a close-up of Bugs Bunny, just for fun:

Logic - Heart - Soul

Awhile back I posted about how Dave Shaddix made his Spock mosaic, which he got autographed by Leonard Nimoy.  He has since gone on to complete a tryptich which recently debuted at the Phoenix Comicon.

Check out the mosaic on flickr, where you can read more information about it.

Dave has posted a few other interesting mosaics in the past few months, including this Marilyn Monroe, as painted by Andy (Warhol, I presume):

Artomatic

Artomatic is an interesting event held in Crystal City, Virginia.  According to Tracy Lee,

"Artomatic is a 5-week long event with over 1,300 visual artists and performers - we've taken over an 11-story office building in Crystal City, VA and turned it into a gigantic art experience. Each visual artist gets a space in exchange for a registration fee and working in the event - the entire enterprise is volunteer driven. 1,100 visual artists all working together to put on a show. It will be up until June 23rd."

Tracy's son, Duncan Guthery, has taken over a room to display LEGO "Art of the Pixel" -- 8-bit computer images recreated in LEGO.  He has lots of LEGO mosaics of subjects taken from pop culture on display, including Nyan Cat, the King of All Cosmos and the Prince from Katamari, The Beatles Yellow Submarine, Sonic the Hedgehog, Street Fighter characters, and My Neighbor Totoro.

Duncan has already sold three of the mosaics.  I'm impressed:  when I was 11, I didn't even know what a LEGO mosaic was.  I had no idea that one could build, display, and even sell such things!

You can see Duncan's Artomatic profile here.  It includes lots of extra pictures and information.

ItLUG Latina 2012

This mosaic of the Classic Mosaic Logo was shown at ItLUG Latina 2012.  It was made by Massimiliano Valentini (dogensaga).

Just look at all those minifigs!

There was also a giant mosaic of the Colosseum assembled by visitors during the event.

You can see a time-lapse video of the construction of the mosaic here

Domenico Franco (f_Random) took photos of the event, which you can see in this set on flickr.

Watch Out, Piggies

Here's a cute little mosaic dressed up as a Samsung Galaxy Note, complete with stylus and Angry Birds game.

Angry Birds on LEGO Samsung Galaxy Note

Joris Blok made a 1:1 replica of his phone.  I really like the use of the curved corners along with the SNOT-ed plates.  And now I have a sudden desire to go play Angry Birds....

Polly Want a Mosaic?

A few weeks ago, Hans Demol (hd_lego) sent me a link to a parrots mosaic done by Maarten Steurbaut, a fellow member of his LUG in Belgium (BeLUG).  He thought it impressive, and I do too.

Here is a picture he took of it at BrickMania Wetteren 2012, where you can see it in the background.  It looks crisp and clear from across a large room:

You can read a bit more about the parrots mosaic on Maarten's website, or even hire him to build a LEGO mosaic for you.

The LEGO Show

I have quite the backlog of mosaics to cover.  I guess it's best to start out small, just getting one of them posted.  And in this case, when I say start out "small", I really mean "ginormous".  There was a LEGO convention in Manchester this past weekend (officially endorsed by The LEGO Group), and this giant mosaic was on display.

Jack R. (The Expendable), who took the picture, had to "panorama-ize" it to get it all in one shot.  I get the feeling that it would be even more impressive in person.

Thanks to Bruce for the tip.
